Prophet Musa (as) and the Day of Ashura

Muslim Hands

The Day of Ashura takes place on the 10th of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar. While the Day of Ashura is known for commemorating the Battle of Karbala, it is also a significant day in Islamic history for remembering when Allah (swt) saved Prophet Musa (as) and the Israelites from the Pharaoh’s cruelty.  Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said:

“This is a great day when Allah saved Musa and his people and drowned Pharaoh and his people.” (Sahih Muslim)

What is the story of Prophet Musa (as)?
Prophet Musa (as) was born during a time of oppression. Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt, had enslaved the Israelites and ordered the killing of all newborn boys to reduce their population. In an act of faith and desperation, Prophet Musa’s (as) mother placed her infant son in a basket and set it afloat on the Nile River. The basket reached the palace, where Prophet Musa (as) was taken in and raised by the Pharaoh’s family.

As Prophet Musa (as) grew older, Allah (swt) chose him as a Prophet and commanded him to confront the Pharaoh to demand the Israelites' freedom. However, the Pharoah refused to do so. On the 10th of Muharram, the sea parted to let the Israelites escape the Pharaoh’s army. As the waters closed, the Pharaoh’s army drowned. This day of rescue is now remembered as the Day of Ashura.

What is the significance of the Day of Ashura?
The Day of Ashura symbolizes freedom from oppression and Allah’s (swt) mercy, reflecting Prophet Musa’s (as) victory over tyranny. Prophet Muhammad (saw) encouraged Muslims to fast on this day, as it wipes away the sins of the past year. Learn more about fasting during this sacred time of the year: Fasting During Muharram.

The story of Prophet Musa’s (as) rescue is a reminder to resist oppression, have faith in Allah (swt), and to be resilient during difficult times.

The Day of Ashura also holds additional significance, as it commemorates the Battle of Karbala, where Imam Hussain (as), along with his family and companions were martyred while standing against injustice and oppression.

When is the Day of Ashura?
The Day of Ashura is expected to take place July 6, 2025, but the exact date may vary based on the sighting of the moon.

Charity on the Day of Ashura
Muharram is a sacred month rooted in compassion, unity, and gratitude. These themes are reflected in the story of Prophet Musa’s (as) freedom from oppression, along with the Battle of Karbala. It is a time to embody these virtues through acts of charity. Giving during Muharram honors the memory of those who suffered and stood firm in their beliefs. Support orphans and vulnerable children, as many members of the Prophet’s (saw) family were left orphaned after the Battle of Karbala.

Today, vulnerable communities continue to face conflict, war, and natural disasters. Impoverished families in Gaza, displaced communities in Yemen, and refugees from Syria are in urgent need of assistance. Providing them with essentials like food and clean water can result in lasting change.
