Fasting During Muharram

Muslim Hands

Muharram is a month for increased worship, reflection, and remembrance. Among the spiritual practices associated with Muharram, fasting is regarded as one of the most virtuous.

Is it recommended to fast in Muharram?
Yes, it is recommended to fast during this month, particularly on certain days, such as the 9th, 10th (for Sunni Muslims), and 11th of Muharram.

What is the significance of fasting during Muharram?
Muharram is the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is considered one of the four sacred months in the Quran. Fasting symbolizes self-discipline, empathy for those suffering, and dedication to Allah’s (swt) commands.

Muharram marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (as), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, along with several of his family members and companions at the Battle of Karbala. This period of devotion is also a time to contemplate the values of justice, sacrifice, and the moral duty to stand against oppression.

When does Muharram 2025 begin?
This year, Muharram is anticipated to begin Friday, June 27, 2025. This is based on the sighting of the moon and is subject to change.

Is it recommended to fast on the Day of Ashura?
While fasting for Shia Muslims is recommended throughout the month of Muharram, they tend not to fast on the Day of Ashura, as it is observed as a day of mourning.

In contrast, Sunni Muslims are encouraged to fast on this day, following the practice of Prophet Muhammad (saw). According to a hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (saw) said that fasting on this day expiates the sins of the previous year (Sahih Muslim).

Additionally, fasting on the 9th and 11th of Muharram is considered virtuous.

Fasting criteria during Muharram
When fasting during the month of Muharram, begin with a sincere intention (niyyah) made before dawn. This intention reflects the commitment to fast for the sake of Allah (swt) and is an important part of worship.

While fasting, abstain from food, drink, and any other actions that invalidate the fast, from dawn (Fajr) until sunset (Maghrib). This period of abstinence is a time of self-discipline and spiritual focus.

Recite the Quran and perform acts of charity. These practices deepen connection to Allah (swt) and reinforce the significance of the month.

Is fasting in Muharram different from fasting in Ramadan?
Fasting in Muharram is similar to fasting in Ramadan. The main difference is that fasting during Ramadan is obligatory, while fasting during Muharram is not.
