The Day of Ashura 2025

What is the Day of Ashura 2025?
The Day of Ashura is one of the most important days in the Islamic calendar. It takes place on the 10th of Muharram. In Arabic, Ashura translates to ‘tenth,’ referring specifically to the Day of Ashura.
For Shia Muslims, Ashura is a day of mourning in memory of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (as), along with his family and companions during the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE. The day is commemorated through rituals such as processions and gatherings to honor the sacrifice.
For Sunni Muslims, Ashura is associated with Prophet Musa (as) and the Israelites, as it marks the day that Muslims were saved from the Pharaoh’s tyranny by the parting of the Red Sea. Sunni Muslims also acknowledge the Battle of Karbala and the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (as), along with his family and companions.

In a Hadith, one of Prophet Muhammad’s companions, Ibn ‘Abbas, said:
"I never saw the Messenger of Allah (swt) so keen to fast any day and give it priority over any other than this day, the Day of ‘Ashura,’ and this month, (Ramadan)." (Sahih al-Bukhari)
Fasting also allows you to earn more rewards from Allah (swt).
