Khadija’s Cataract Surgery: Restoring Sight & Hope

Hassan Amarsi

Khadija Abdullahi is a 55-year-old widow living in Fabidji, Niger. She is a mother of seven children – six girls and one boy – ranging in age from 14 to 30. For the past five years, Khadija has been suffering from cataract in her left eye. A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, which causes blurred vision and can eventually lead to blindness if left untreated. Since she only has vision in one eye, her ability to perform daily tasks such as cooking and caring for her children has been significantly impacted.

Khadija relies on small-scale farming and runs a small business, earning approximately 2,000 CFA (roughly $4.82 CAD) per day.

A major challenge for those living in Fabidji is access to healthcare. The closest eye clinic from Khadija's house is over 30 kilometers away.

Eye Cataracts and Muslim Hands Canada

Thanks to your generous support, individuals like Khadija are able to access medical care.

Khadija has completed her eye cataract screening and is now preparing for surgery on her left eye. She hopes the surgery will fully restore her vision and allow her to return to work so that she can continue to provide for her family. Khadija is thankful for the support she has received. “May Allah (swt) reward them,” she said, referring to those who helped her with  treatment. “I am very happy and grateful. I will keep them in my prayers.”

Muslim Hands Canada’s Gift of Sight initiative provides cataract surgeries to those in need, restoring vision and transforming lives. For just $150, we provide screening, surgery, and aftercare for one patient. We also offer eye camps in improvised regions across the globe.

Cataract Awareness Month

June marks Cataract Awareness Month, a movement aimed at raising awareness about the leading cause of blindness worldwide. It highlights the importance of early detection and treatment. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), only 17% of people with cataract-related vision impairment globally have received proper treatment. Cataract Awareness Month serves as a reminder to prioritize eye health and support access to care for vulnerable communities.

This Cataract Awareness Month, give the Gift of Sight.

Your compassion has also transformed the lives of Soumana Coulibaly and Nadia Umar. Let’s continue to restore vision in some of the most vulnerable communities worldwide.
