Shaping Canada’s Future: The Impact of Muslim Voters

Hassan Amarsi

The federal election is just a few weeks away, taking place on Monday, April 28, 2025. As Canadians head to the polls, Muslim voters must make their voices heard and ensure their votes count.

Statistics Canada reports a significant rise in the Canadian Muslim population, which has more than doubled in the past 20 years. According to the 2021 Census, Muslims account for 4.9% of the Canadian population, up from 2% in 2001.

The Muslim vote can play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our country and influencing policies that impact Muslim communities both in Canada and globally.

The Importance of Representation

Representation in government ensures that laws and policies reflect the needs, values, and concerns of the Muslim population. Issues such as immigration, social justice, education, and healthcare are often debated by political leaders who hold differing opinions on these matters. Voting empowers Muslims to elect leaders who can advocate for policies that benefit their communities and address important issues.

Why Is It Important to Vote?

Voting allows us to elect leaders who will push for meaningful change. In the 2021 federal election, 12 Muslim MPs were elected, representing a level of political representation that had never been seen in Canada before. Civic engagement among Muslims is growing and helping reshape policies to reflect the diverse needs of Canadians.

As a democracy, voting is both a right and a privilege. By participating in the election, we strengthen the democratic process and ensure that diverse perspectives are considered in policymaking.

How Do Our Votes Impact Foreign Relations?

Domestic politics significantly influence foreign policy. Different political parties have varying views on international relations, including their viewpoints on trade, immigration, and providing humanitarian aid. Given recent events, such as the collapse of the ceasefire in Gaza, it is crucial to consider which political candidates are advocating for peace and supporting the delivery of humanitarian aid.

The foreign policy implications of the recent Trump administration in the U.S. will also likely be a prominent topic in this election. Learn about party leaders' positions on issues like tariffs, sovereignty, and international relations. Stay informed, do your research, and vote strategically.

Can Voting Help Address Islamophobia and Discrimination?

By exercising our right to vote, we can influence policies that combat Islamophobia. Various political parties prioritize anti-racism efforts and seek to reform policies to promote inclusivity. Voting allows the Muslim community to address the root causes of Islamophobia and advocate for a safer and more equitable society.
