Safar 2025: Reviving History

Muslim Hands

Safar is the second month of the Islamic calendar. In Arabic, Safar translates to ‘empty’ or ‘void’ (derived from the word ‘sifr’), referring to the time when people would leave their homes for war or trade, resulting in their empty dwellings.

When is Safar 2025?
This year, Safar is anticipated to begin on July 26, 2025, depending on the moon sighting.

What is the Historical Significance of Safar?
Safar is a month with several key events in Islamic history.

Safar is an important month for  Muslims because it marks the time when Prophet Muhammad (saw) migrated from Makkah to Medina, a moment that helped spread Islam worldwide. It is an important period to reflect on the challenges and sacrifices that the Prophet (saw) faced in delivering his message. In Safar, Prophet Muhammad (saw) became ill, and eventually passed away in Rabi' al-Awwal.

The Battle of Al-Abwa, one of the earliest military expeditions in Islamic history, took place during the month of Safar. It marked an initial attempt by Prophet Muhammad (saw) and his followers to assert their presence and challenge Quraysh trade routes. While it was a peaceful confrontation, it represented a significant step in the Muslim community’s defense and consolidation. This battle paved the way for subsequent events that would influence the development of Islamic history.

On the 28th of Safar, Imam Hasan (as), the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (saw), was martyred through poisoning. He was reportedly poisoned by his wife, under the instigation of the Umayyad ruler Mu'awiyah, who sought to eliminate Imam Hasan (as) to secure his son Yazid’s succession. Imam al-Ridha (as) is also believed to have been martyred by poisoning on the 29th of Safar, under the orders of the Abbasid Caliph al-Ma'mun.

Since Safar follows the month of Muharram, many Muslims continue to remember the Battle of Karbala. The surviving members of Imam Hussain’s (as) family were taken as prisoners to Syria during this month. Their suffering and resilience are remembered during this month. Is Safar One of the Sacred Months?
Safar is not among the four sacred months, which are Muharram, Rajab, Dhu al-Qa'dah, and Dhu al-Hijjah.

Is Fasting Recommended in Safar?
Fasting in Safar is not specifically prescribed but Muslims may observe voluntary fasts anytime to earn extra rewards.

What Are the White Days of Safar?
The ‘white days’ refer to the 13th, 14th, and 15th nights of each Islamic lunar month, named for the time when the moon is full and at its brightest. These days are considered a virtuous time for worship, including voluntary fasting, reflection, and supplication.
