Q. What is Ramadan ?

A. Ramadan is a month of fasting and abstaining from things considered to be impure for the mind and body. During Ramadan, we abstain from food, drink, and impure thoughts between sunrise and sunset, allowing us to focus on prayer and supplication.

The act of fasting allows us to understand the pain and suffering of millions around the world who live in poverty. During this month, it is highly recommended to give Zakat. The month ends with Eid al-Fitr, a joyful occasion of celebration, generosity, and the exchange of gifts between family and friends.

Q. What is Suhoor ?

A. Muslims begin their fast at sunrise after eating a pre-dawn meal (referred to as suhoor) before the morning prayers (Fajr). The fast is broken at sundown with a meal (referred to as iftar), which is eaten after the evening prayer (Maghrib).

Q. What is Iftar?

A. Muslims begin their fast at sunrise after eating a pre-dawn meal (referred to as suhoor) before the morning prayers (Fajr). The fast is broken at sundown with a meal (referred to as iftar), which is eaten after the evening prayer (Maghrib).

Q. What to do if you Can’t Fast?

A. For those who are unable to fast during the month of Ramadan, a payment referred to as Fidyah is made and is allocated towards helping the poor. This compensation roughly equates to providing two meals per day for every missed fast.

For individuals who deliberately break or miss a fast during the month of Ramadan and are unable to make up for it by fasting for 60 consecutive days, a payment called Kaffarah is required. This payment provides one meal each for 60 needy people.

Q. What is Zakat?

A. Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is obligatory charity for all eligible Muslims. It is a form of spiritual purification and wealth redistribution and is calculated at a rate of 2.5% of an individual’s annual savings and wealth, this is known as Nisab.

Muslim Hands has been distributing your Zakat for over 30 years with utmost care and precision as we believe that Zakat is a sacred responsibility (Amanah). Muslim Hands Canada uses your Zakat towards initiatives that focus on improving access to education, healthcare, food, and water for underdeveloped communities globally.

Q. What is Sadaqah Jariyah?

A. Sadaqah Jariyah is a continuous charity that brings ongoing rewards, even after one’s passing.

Q. What are some examples of Sadaqah Jariyah?

A. Examples of Sadaqah Jariyah include planting fruit trees, constructing water wells, vocational training, and assisting livelihood projects.

Q. What is Zakt al-Fitr?

A. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims are required to pay Zakat al-Fitr, which is a form of Zakat that serves to self-purify and give back to the poor.

Zakat al-Fitr is paid before Eid al-Fitr, to ensure that the needy have the means to partake in Eid al-Fitr celebrations.

Zakat al-Fitr can be paid to Muslim Hands Canada at $10 per household member.

The Prophet was asked which fast was most virtuous after Ramadan? He said: "Sha'ban in honor of Ramadan" He said: "Which charity is best?" He (pbuh) said: "Charity in Ramadan."
