Dhul Qa’dah 2025: One of the Sacred Months

Following the blessed month of Shawwal, and just before Dhul Hijjah, comes a sacred and often overlooked period in the Islamic calendar — Dhul Qa’dah. As the 11th month in the Islamic calendar, Dhul Qa’dah offers a unique spiritual pause. A time to reflect and recalibrate.
What does Dhul Qa’dah Mean?
In Arabic, Dhul Qa’dah translates to ‘the month of truce’ or ‘the month of sitting’.
When is Dhul Qa'dah?
Dhul Qa'dah is expected to begin on April 29, 2025, depending on the moon sighting.
What are the Sacred Months in Islam?
The four sacred months in Islam are Dhul Qa’dah, Dhul Hijjah, Muharram, and Rajab.
“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred...”
(Surah At-Tawbah, 9:36)
During these months, good deeds carry extra weight. These times are meant to foster peace, justice, and improved consciousness.
What is the Historical Significance of Dhul Qa’dah?
Historically, Dhul Qa’dah was a time when tribes refrained from fighting and travelling, in preparation for the Hajj pilgrimage. It is also a month when violence was forbidden. As this month begins, we’re reminded of the many places around the world that continue to face ongoing conflict. Countries including Palestine, Sudan, Yemen, Somalia, Myanmar, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan continue to navigate humanitarian rises that threaten the safety of their civilians.
“They ask you about fighting in the sacred months. Say, “Fighting during these months is a great sin.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:217)
We pray that the blessings of Dhul Qa’dah bring healing, hope, and protection to our brothers and sisters in these regions — and that lasting peace comes beyond this sacred time.
Is Fasting Recommended in Dhul Qa’dah?
While there are no specific days when fasting during Dhul Qa’dah is required, it is always best to follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (saw) and fast on Mondays and Thursdays. It is also recommended to fast during Ayyam al-Beed, which are the 13th, 14th, and 15th days of each month in the Islamic calendar. On these specific nights, the moon reaches or approaches its full phase.
