The Importance of Muharram, the Month of Allah

Muslim Hands Canada

What is Muharram?

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar, and one of the four sacred months.  It marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year, signifying a fresh start for Muslims, and providing an opportunity to set new goals for the year ahead.

“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion [i.e., way], so do not wrong yourselves during them. And fight against the disbelievers collectively as they fight against you collectively. And know that Allah is with the righteous [who fear Him].” (Qur’an, 9:36)

The month of Muharram marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, and his companions in the Battle of Karbala.

The Four Sacred Months

 The Prophet (saw) said:

“The year is twelve months, of which four are sacred: three are in succession, namely, Dhul-Qi’dah, Dhul-Hijjah and Muharram, and (the fourth one) Rajab (of the tribe of) Mudar, which is between Jumada (Thani) and Shaban.” (Bukhari)

When is Muharram?

In 2024, Muharram begins Sunday, 7th July and is expected to end August 5th.

Historical Significance of this Special Month

Ashura is a significant event in Muharram, taking place on the 10th of the month.  For Shia Muslims, Ashura commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussein.

Impact of Giving, Devotion, and Repentance in Muharram

During Muharram, Muslims engage in acts of devotion and reflection.

Throughout the month, there is an emphasis on remembering Allah (swt) through prayers, forgiveness, and spiritual introspection. This period serves as an opportunity for renewal and deepening of faith.

The Prophet (saw) was known for his generosity and there is no better way to seek Allah (swt's) mercy than by emulating His most favored creation,

"You have indeed in the Messenger of Allah, a beautiful pattern [of conduct] for anyone whose hope is God and the Final Day" (Qur’an, 33:21)

Charitable acts such as giving Sadaqah and Zakat, assisting others, and upholding good conduct are important. Consider Muharram as a time of spiritual development aiming to strengthen bonds with Allah (swt) and the community.

Fasting During the Month of Muharram

Fasting, especially on the 10th of Ashura, is encouraged as a means of spiritual worship and cleansing of sins.

“A man came to the Prophet (PBUH) and said: ‘When fasting is better after the month of Ramadan?’ He said: ‘The month of Allah which is called Muharram.’”
(Ibn Majah)
