Across Faiths and Borders: Solidarity with Victims of Religious Violence

Muslim Hands

In recent years, we have witnessed a troubling rise in Islamophobia – from hate crimes to discriminatory legislation. For many Muslims, this reality gives profound personal meaning to August 22, the International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2019. This day raises awareness about discrimination and violence targeting people of faith, while promoting global solidarity with victims and survivors. Its significance extends beyond our own experiences; it is about standing with all communities facing oppression based on their beliefs.

The UN established this day not only to remember victims and survivors, but to encourage interfaith respect and peaceful coexistence. As Muslims, we are guided by the Quranic teaching that every soul is sacred: “Let there be no compulsion in religion” (Quran 2:256).

Standing against religious persecution is not only a humanitarian duty but an integral part of our faith.

Our Work
At Muslim Hands Canada, we stand in solidarity with victims of violence based on religion or belief. Our programs are based on Islamic values of justice, compassion, and unity. How we protect the dignity of vulnerable communities:

Emergency Relief: We respond quickly to crises where vulnerable communities are targeted, ensuring victims receive shelter, food, and medical aid. Learn about our impactful initiatives in Gaza, Yemen and with displaced Syrians.

Awareness: Through our advocacy work, we highlight injustices against any faith group, amplifying the call for tolerance and protection of religious freedoms. Attend our Events and volunteer locally and abroad

Local Projects: Within Canada, we actively work to combat Islamophobia and promote interfaith connection through education, partnerships, and community initiatives. Learn more about our local projects.

As Martin Luther King Jr. stated, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” At Muslim Hands Canada, we take this as a call to action. Together, lets continue to remember victims of violence based on religion and belief. Let’s stand with survivors, and renew our commitment to building a world where people of all faiths are respected.
