Hajj: The Facts

Muslim Hands

What is Hajj?

Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is a pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The pilgrimage involves rituals performed over a few days, including walking around the Kaaba (the black structure in the middle of Masjid al-Haram Mosque).

It also involves performing worship at designated locations and symbolically reenacting events from the life of the Prophet Abraham and his family.  The pilgrimage serves as a time of spiritual reflection, and purification, uniting Muslims of different nationalities, ethnicities, and social statuses.

The journey is believed to cleanse sins, bring blessings, and strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood among Muslims. Download our interactive Hajj and Umrah guide to learn more.

Which Month Does Hajj Take Place?

The Hajj occurs every year during the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic lunar calendar.  In 2024, the holy month of Dhul Hijjah begins June 7th and ends, July 7th, 2024.  The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah are considered the best days of the year, better than the days of Ramadan.

When is the Day of Arafah?

The Day of Arafah falls on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah. In 2024, it is expected to fall on June 16th.  The day is significant in the Islamic calendar since it's the day our beloved Prophet (saw) delivered his Farewell Sermon in 632 CE.

The day of Arafah is referenced in Surah al-Maidah of the Holy Quran.

It is the day of forgiveness and repentance so increasing dhikr, reciting the holy Quran, and performing good deeds can be extremely rewarding.

“Today I have perfected your faith for you, completed My favour upon you, and chosen Islam as your way.”

(Quran 5:3)

When is Hajj in 2024

The Hajj pilgrimage begins on the 8th of Dhul Hijjah, Friday, June 14th, 2024 of the Georgian calendar. It is expected to end 13th of Dhul Hijjah, 19th June, 2024.

Is Hajj considered fard/mandatory ?

Every adult Muslim who is physically and financially able to do so must perform Hajj at least once in his or her lifetime.  Prophet Muhammad (saw) declared Hajj mandatory when he delivered his sermon in 632 AD, the year of his passing.

Can Hajj be performed without Mahram?

Certain scholars believe women who wish to perform Umrah or Hajj unaccompanied by a Mahram may do so if they are part of a group. However, opinions vary among scholars. It is advisable to consult your Imam on this.

How to Select a Hajj Package

Selecting a Hajj package involves researching options, comparing packages, considering budget, and ensuring accreditation. Search for reputable travel agencies or organizations with positive reviews and certifications. Better yet, ask friends and relatives, and choose agencies based on positive experiences. Consult with the chosen agency to clarify all details in writing and book the package that fits your needs and budget.

Prepare for the pilgrimage by gathering necessary documents, arranging vaccinations, and packing essentials for the journey.

By following these steps and carefully considering your options, you can select a Hajj package that provides a meaningful and fulfilling experience while ensuring your comfort, safety, and spiritual well-being.
