The Heart-Wrenching Struggles of a Yemeni woman
A widow in her 60s is sitting inside her dilapidated home. The surroundings smell of sewage. There is no water in the taps. Najabee often walks to the nearest well to fetch water. These cramped quarters also accommodate her children and grandchildren.
The family was struck by poverty even before the war started in Yemen. Since her husband’s passing, she worked as a maid, trying to make ends meet. Now, she sells dry leaf baskets.
But her income is minimal and not enough. Najabee has been a beneficiary of our Bread factory since a few years. Our bread factories in Yemen are a source of nutrition for the tens of thousands of families fighting starvation and hunger.
When asked how the bread tastes, she replies: “We love it and even fight over it.”
Women like Najabee are forever grateful. “I pray for the donors everyday because they have made a big difference in my life.”
The war in Yemen began in 2014, but continues to harm civilians in unbelievable ways. Around 12.9 million children need humanitarian assistance, and a child is dying every ten minutes in Yemen. There have been over 4.3 million internally displaced people in Yemen since 2015.
