What Is the Purpose of Qurbani/Udhiyah?

Muslim Hands

Qurbani – also referred to as Udhiyah – is more than a ritual sacrifice performed during Eid al-Adha. It is a powerful expression of faith, devotion, and compassion. Rooted in the story of Prophet Ibrahim (as), Qurbani reminds us of the importance of submitting to the will of Allah (swt) with sincerity and trust.

A Reflection of Obedience and Faith

At its core, Qurbani represents obedience to Allah (swt). Prophet Ibrahim (as) was willing to sacrifice what he loved most, demonstrating complete submission. Qurbani continues this legacy, reminding Muslims to prioritize their faith above all else.

Strengthening Compassion and Community

Qurbani also serves as a means of supporting those in need. The meat from the sacrifice is distributed among family, friends, and those experiencing poverty. This ensures that even the most vulnerable members of society can partake in the joy of Eid.

A Reminder of Gratitude and Sacrifice

Qurbani encourages Muslims to reflect on their blessings and practice gratitude. By giving from what they have, believers are reminded that everything ultimately belongs to Allah (swt).

It also teaches the value of sacrifice, not just in wealth, but in time, comfort, and personal desires, all for a greater purpose.

Qurbani is a reminder that true devotion lies in the heart. It is an opportunity to give, to reflect, and to uplift others embodying the values of Islam in action.
