How to Calculate a Qurbani Share

Muslim Hands

Qurbani – also referred to as Udhiyah – is a key act of worship performed during Eid al-Adha. There are several questions around how Qurbani shares work, especially when contributing as part of a group. This guide explains the concept clearly.

What Is a Qurbani Share?

A Qurbani share is the portion of an animal that counts as one person’s sacrifice. Depending on the type of animal, Qurbani can either be done individually or shared among multiple people.

Sharing makes it easier for families, friends, or communities to participate together.

Types of Animals and Sharing Rules

Animals used for Qurbani fall into two categories. Smaller animals such as goats and sheep are offered by one person only, and they cannot be divided into shares. Larger animals such as cows, buffalo, and camels can be shared among multiple participants, with each participant receiving a full Qurbani reward through their portion.

The Calculation of a Qurbani Share

The calculation of a Qurbani share is based on dividing the total cost of a large animal equally among all participants. The key principle is fairness and equality.

The basic formula used is:

Total cost of the animal divided by the number of participants equals the cost per share.

For example, if a group purchases a cow and agrees to share it, the full price of the animal is split evenly among everyone involved. If the total cost of the animal is seven hundred dollars and there are seven participants, each person pays one hundred dollars. This equal division ensures that each share is valid according to Islamic guidelines.

The Importance of Equal Shares

Equal sharing is not just a financial matter but also a religious requirement. Each participant must have an equal stake in the animal. If one person contributes more or less in a way that creates unequal ownership, the Qurbani may not be considered valid. The calculation, therefore, is always done with equality as the main objective.

Distribution After the Calculation

Once the Qurbani is performed, the meat is distributed in a balanced way. A portion is kept for personal use, another is shared with relatives and friends, and another is given to those in need. This distribution reflects the spirit of generosity and community that Qurbani represents.

Common Mistakes in Qurbani Share Calculations

A common issue arises when people treat Qurbani shares like a simple purchase of meat rather than an act of worship. Problems can also occur when contributions are not equal or when participants do not clearly agree beforehand. These mistakes can affect the validity of the Qurbani, which is why understanding the correct method of calculation is so important.
