The Plight of Women in Developing Countries

Muslim Hands

In many developing countries, advancing women's rights is both a human rights issue and a critical factor in national development. Despite progress, many women in these regions face challenges. This affects their access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.

Education: A Key to Empowerment

Education is a powerful driver for empowerment and societal transformation. However, in many developing countries, girls do not have access to education. Culture, family values, economic constraints, and other factors lead many girls to abandon their education.

In countries like Pakistan, where early marriages are common, girls are sometimes pulled out of school to take care of household responsibilities. This limits their access to education, resulting in a significant majority of girls being unable to reach their full potential.  UNICEF estimates 129 million girls are out of school.

What is Muslim Hands doing to promote gender equality and provide access to education?

Investing in education creates opportunities for every child to excel, paving the way for a more equitable future. Through these efforts, we aim to reduce gender gaps and create a more inclusive society.

Our commitment extends to orphans, where we ensure equal access to education and resources, regardless of gender, providing a foundation for all children to achieve their full potential.

Our educational programs are designed to offer more than just classroom learning. We offer motivated teachers, state-of-the-art facilities, and a holistic approach that ensures every child receives the support he/she needs to thrive.  Watch our events coordinator Muhab at the Muslim Hands School of Excellence in Senegal, and Wali Shah at the Muslim Hands School of Excellence in Pakistan.

Healthcare: Addressing Disparities

Many women suffer from inadequate maternal health services, leading to high rates of maternal and infant mortality.  More than 800 women die daily from complications in pregnancy and childbirth.

Though numbers are on a decline compared to a decade ago, we still have a long way to go to see real progress.

Addressing these healthcare disparities requires investment in healthcare infrastructure, education about reproductive health, and policies that prioritize women's health needs.

Supporting our Motherkind campaign not only saves mothers but also saves newborn lives.  We provide prenatal and postnatal care to pregnant women and new mothers in underprivileged communities, reducing their chances of severe complications. By distributing maternity kits and offering support to new mothers, we ensure newborns are cared for.  Witness how your Gifts of Kindness enable us to offer vital services to women like Wassa.

Economic Participation: Breaking Barriers

Economic empowerment is important to women's advancement, yet many women in developing countries face barriers. Societal expectations, gender discrimination, and lack of access to resources such as credit or land ownership can hinder women's ability to start businesses or secure employment.

Women are more likely than men to live in poverty. This disparity arises from various factors, including lower wages for similar work, less access to economic resources, and higher rates of informal employment where earnings are unstable and unregulated, making it harder for women to break free from poverty.

Our Livelihoods campaign supports women financially, allowing them to become self-sufficient, and thus provide for their families. Advancing women’s rights in developing countries requires understanding the challenges they face and a commitment to change. International organizations, governments, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) must work together to address these challenges. Supporting local initiatives, investing in women's education and health, and advocating for legal and cultural reforms are all important areas that need work.

Through coordinated efforts, it is possible to create a more equitable and just world where all women can thrive.
