Transforming Lives Through Hope Shops: A Widow’s Story
After losing her husband to a clan fight three years ago, 47-year-old Amino Adam Usman opened a small shop in Mogadishu, Somalia with help from Muslim Hands – the shop has been a source of livelihood for her family.
Before the violence, Amino and her family lived in Kuntuwary village in Somalia, about 150 kilometers from Mogadishu, the capital. They were forced to leave because of conflict and droughts. After years of moving around, they returned to Mogadishu two years ago but had lost everything.
A year ago, Amino received help from Muslim Hands to open a Hope Shop. “When I found out I would get this shop, I cried with happiness,” she says. The shop provides a steady income, allowing her to support her mother, her children’s educational expenses, and everyday needs, as well as her widowed daughter and her children. She works every day from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Your generosity has changed Amino’s life. “I feel very proud to open this shop every day,” she says.
Amino is grateful for the support she has received. “I send my prayers to the donors. I am very thankful for their kindness. I didn’t know such generous people existed.”
You can change the lives of more women like Amino who are displaced, widowed and struggling to make ends meet. Our Prophet (saw) said: “The one who looks after a widow or a poor person is like a Mujahid (warrior) who fights for Allah’s cause.”
