What is Hajj?
Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is a pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The pilgrimage involves rituals performed over a few days, including walking around the Kaaba (the black structure in the middle of Masjid al-Haram Mosque).
It also involves performing worship at designated locations and symbolically reenacting events from the life of the Prophet Abraham and his family. The pilgrimage serves as a time of spiritual reflection, and purification, uniting Muslims of different nationalities, ethnicities, and social statuses.
The journey is believed to cleanse sins, bring blessings, and strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood among Muslims.
Which Month Does Hajj Take Place?
The Hajj occurs every year during the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic lunar calendar. In 2026, the holy month of Dhul Hijjah begins Monday, May 18. The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah are considered the best days of the year.
When is the Day of Arafah 2026 ?
The Day of Arafah falls on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, June 16. The day is significant in the Islamic calendar since it's the day our beloved Prophet (saw) delivered his Farewell Sermon in 632 CE.
The day of Arafah is referenced in Surah al-Maidah of the Holy Quran.
It is the day of forgiveness and repentance so increasing dhikr, reciting the holy Quran, and performing good deeds can be extremely rewarding.

When is Hajj in 2026
The Hajj pilgrimage is anticipated to begin Monday, May 25. Eid Al-Adha, or the 10th Dhul Hijjah, is on Wednesday, May 27, 2026.
Is Hajj considered fard/mandatory ?
Every adult Muslim who is physically and financially able to do so must perform Hajj at least once in his or her lifetime. Prophet Muhammad (saw) declared Hajj mandatory when he delivered his sermon in 632 AD, the year of his passing.
Can Hajj be performed without Mahram?
Certain scholars believe women who wish to perform Umrah or Hajj unaccompanied by a Mahram may do so if they are part of a group. However, opinions vary among scholars. It is advisable to consult your Imam on this.
How Long Does Hajj Last?
Hajj lasts about 5–6 days, but the exact timing depends on the Islamic lunar calendar.
Does Hajj Occur on the Same Day Every Year?
Hajj does not take place on the same day every year in the Gregorian calendar as it follows the Islamic calendar, which is based on the cycles of the moon. Hajj takes place on the same Islamic dates: 8th to 12th of Dhul Hijjah.
Where Does Hajj Take Place?
Hajj takes place in Mecca, Saudia Arabia. Pilgrims visit sacred sites, including Masjid al-Haram and the Kaaba. They also travel to nearby locations, including Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah.
Who is Exempt from Hajj?

When did the First Hajj Pilgrimage Take Place?
Abu Bakr As-Siddiq carried out the first official pilgrimage to Hajj. He led the pilgrimage to Makkah in the ninth year after Hijrah. In 623 CE, the year after, our Prophet ( saw) performed his only Hajj pilgrimage, delivering his last sermon. Since then, Muslims can perform this important pillar of Islam, Hajj.
A Brief History of Hajj
Our Prophet Muhammad (saw) and the Muslims performed the first Islamic pilgrimage, Hajj in 628 CE. Allah (swt) instructed him to begin establishing the traditions started by Prophet Ibrahim (as). Prophet Ibrahim (as), on the instructions of Allah(swt), travelled to the desert of Makkah, where he left his wife Hajar and infant son Ismail. They ran out of essentials, and in an effort to find water, Hajra ran between the hills of Safa and Marwa, seeking help.

Search for reputable travel agencies or organizations with positive reviews and certifications. Better yet, ask friends and relatives, and choose agencies based on positive experiences.
