Transforming the Lives of Street Children

April 12 marks the International Day for Street Children, a day dedicated to raising awareness and advocating for children who lack access to housing and are forced to live and work on the streets. These children are exposed to violence and exploitation and often sacrifice their safety so that they can meet their basic needs. Growing up on the streets takes a lasting toll on both their physical and mental health.

Who started the International Day for Street Children?

The International Day for Street Children was established by The Consortium for Street Children (CSC). The observance of this day started in 2011, as the CSC saw the importance in promoting access to education, healthcare, and legal protection, as well as social inclusion and the recognition of street children’s rights.

Which countries have the highest rates of street children?

Some of countries with the highest number of street children include India, Brazil, Pakistan, Nigeria, Indonesia, Somalia, Bangladesh, and the Philippines.

How can we get involved?

On the International Day for Street Children, think about ways you can get involved.

• Raise Awareness: Use your social media platforms to advocate for better policies and protection for street children. You can also raise awareness by getting involved at local events and inform those in your community about ways we can make a difference.
• Volunteer: Street children are not only prevalent in developing countries. Get involved with local initiatives that assist children with access to education, healthcare, food and water. • Donate: There are several nonprofit organizations that assist children with access to basic needs.
