What Is Safar ? 

Safar is the second month of the Islamic Hijri calendar, following Muharram. While it is not one of the four sacred months, Safar holds historical importance and offers a time for reflection without any prescribed rituals or obligations. 

When Is Safar 2026? 

Safar is expected to begin on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, subject to moon sighting. 

The Historical Significance of Safar 

Safar is remembered for several important historical events: 

• Prophet Muhammad (saw) fell ill during Safar before passing away in Rabi’ al-Awwal. Despite his illness, he continued to lead prayers. 

• The period of the Hijrah, the migration from Makkah to Madinah, is closely associated with Safar and marked a turning point in Islamic history. 

• The Battle of Al-Abwa, one of the earliest Islamic expeditions, occurred during this month. 

• It is widely believed that Imam Hasan, the grandson of the Prophet, was martyred on the 28th of Safar. 

As Safar follows Muharram, many Muslims also continue reflecting on the Battle of Karbala (link) and the trials faced by the family of Imam Hussain. 

Worship During Safar 

During Safar, Muslims continue their daily prayers, charity, and good deeds as in any other month. 

• Fasting is voluntary and permitted at any time. 

• The white days (13th, 14th and 15th of the lunar month) remain recommended for voluntary fasting, as in all months. 

• There is no specific dua prescribed for Safar. 

Islam encourages reliance on Allah (swt) alone and discourages superstitions connected to specific dates or months.
