Du’as Before and After Eating

Du’as Before and After Eating

A Sunnah at Every Meal

Eating and drinking are everyday blessings that come from Allah (swt). Islam teaches us to pause at these simple moments and remember the One who provides our sustenance. By making du’a before and after eating, we turn a daily habit into an act of worship and gratitude.

The Prophet Muhammad (saw) reminded us that remembering Allah (swt) at mealtimes brings barakah and mindfulness into our lives.

Du’a Before Eating

Before beginning a meal, the Prophet Muhammad (saw) taught us to mention the name of Allah (swt). This small act reminds us that all provision comes from Him.

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ Transliteration: Bismillah Translation: In the name of Allah (swt)

If you forget to say it before eating, you can say:

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ فِي أَوَّلِهِ وَآخِرِه Transliteration: Bismillah fi awwalihi wa akhirihi Translation: In the name of Allah (swt) at the beginning and at the end

Du’a After Eating

After finishing a meal or drink, it is recommended to thank Allah (swt) for His generosity and care.

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنَا وَسَقَانَا وَجَعَلَنَا مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ Transliteration: Alhamdulillahil-ladhi at’amana wa saqana wa ja‘alana minal muslimin Translation: Praise be to Allah (swt) who has provided us with food and drink and made us among those who submit to Him.

Remembering Allah (swt) in Everyday Blessings

As we thank Allah (swt) for the food before us, we are reminded to give sadaqah and zakat by helping provide essential food aid to those across the world who are suffering from hunger and food insecurity.

Through these short du’as, we learn gratitude, humility, and awareness of Allah (swt) in even the smallest moments of our day.
