Du’as for Those Who Have Returned to Allah (swt)

Losing a loved one is one of life’s most painful experiences. Grief can leave us feeling helpless and numb, but Islam gives us a powerful way to respond through du’a.

Praying for those who have passed away is an act of mercy, love, and continued connection, asking Allah (swt) to grant them peace, forgiveness, and light in the next life.

When Hearing the News of a Death

This verse reminds us that life belongs to Allah (swt) and that our return to Him is certain.

إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ Transliteration: Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji‘oon Translation: Surely, we belong to Allah (swt) and to Him we will return

Du’a for Forgiveness and Mercy

This is one of the most comprehensive supplications that can be made for the deceased at any time.

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ وَعَافِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ Transliteration: Allahumma-ghfir lahu warhamhu wa ‘aafihi wa‘fu ‘anhu Translation: O Allah (swt), forgive them, have mercy on them, grant them wellbeing, and pardon them

Du’a for Light and Peace in the Grave

This du’a asks Allah (swt) to grant comfort and clarity in the grave.

اللَّهُمَّ افْسَحْ لَهُ فِي قَبْرِهِ وَنَوِّرْ لَهُ فِيهِ Transliteration: Allahumma-fsah lahu fee qabrihi wa nawwir lahu feeh Translation: O Allah (swt), expand their grave and fill it with light

Du’a for the Deceased and for Ourselves

This supplication asks Allah (swt) to forgive both the deceased and those left behind.

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَلَنَا Transliteration: Allahumma-ghfir lahu wa lana Translation: O Allah (swt), forgive them and forgive us

Du’a After Burial

The Prophet Muhammad (saw) encouraged making this short du’a after burial.

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ اللَّهُمَّ ثَبِّتْهُ Transliteration: Allahumma-ghfir lahu Allahumma thabbit-hu Translation: O Allah (swt), forgive them. O Allah (swt), make them firm

Du’a for the deceased continues to benefit them even after death and brings comfort to grieving hearts. It is a reminder that mercy does not end with this life.
