Du’a for Sleeping

Peaceful Nights Through Du’a

As we prepare to rest, Islam encourages us to end the day with remembrance of Allah (swt). Sleep is a time of renewal, and turning to Allah (swt) before sleeping brings comfort, protection, and peace to the heart.

The Prophet Muhammad (saw) taught simple du’as to help us place our trust in Allah (swt) at the close of each day and upon waking.

Du’a Before Sleeping

Before going to sleep, the Prophet Muhammad (saw) would place his right hand under his cheek and say:

اللَّهُمَّ بِاسْمِكَ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا Transliteration: Allahumma bismika amutu wa ahya Translation: O Allah (swt), with Your name I die and I live

This du’a reminds us that our life and rest are in the care of Allah (swt).

Du’a for Peaceful Sleep

For protection from fear, anxiety, or disturbing dreams, this supplication seeks refuge in Allah (swt):

أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ غَضَبِهِ وَعِقَابِهِ وَشَرِّ عِبَادِهِ وَمِنْ هَمَزَاتِ الشَّيَاطِينِ وَأَنْ يَحْضُرُونِ Transliteration: A‘oodhu bi kalimaatillahit-taammaati min ghadabihi wa ‘iqaabihi wa sharri ‘ibaadihi wa min hamazaatish-shayaateen wa an yahduroon Translation: I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah (swt) from His anger and punishment, from the evil of His servants, and from the whispers and presence of devils

Du’a for Difficulty Sleeping

If rest feels hard to find, this du’a helps calm the heart by remembering Allah’s power and mercy:

لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ الْوَاحِدُ الْقَهَّارُ رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا الْعَزِيزُ الْغَفَّارُ Transliteration: Laa ilaaha illallaahul-waahidul-qahhaar, Rabbus-samaawaati wal-ardi wa maa baynahumal-‘azeezul-ghaffaar Translation: There is no one worthy of worship except Allah (swt), the One, the All-Powerful, Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, the Mighty, the All-Forgiving

Du’a for Forgiveness Before Sleep

This well-known supplication allows us to end the day by seeking forgiveness and returning to Allah (swt) with sincerity:

اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّي لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ خَلَقْتَنِي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ Transliteration: Allahumma anta rabbi laa ilaaha illa anta, khalaqtani wa ana ‘abduk Translation: O Allah (swt), You are my Lord. There is no one worthy of worship except You. You created me and I am Your servant

Du’a Upon Waking

When waking, the Prophet Muhammad (saw) taught us to begin the day with gratitude:

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ Transliteration: Alhamdu lillahil-ladhee ahyana ba‘da ma amatana wa ilayhin-nushoor Translation: All praise is for Allah (swt), who gave us life after causing us to die, and to Him is the return

A Sunnah for Restful Nights

Ending and beginning each day with du’a helps place our worries, rest, and hopes in the care of Allah (swt).

As you place your worries and hopes in Allah (swt) before sleep, giving sadaqah is a beautiful way to seek barakah and peace of heart, so consider donating through Muslim Hands Canada and allowing your kindness to bring comfort to others as you rest.

May Allah (swt) grant us peaceful sleep, forgiven hearts, and mornings filled with ease and gratitude. Ameen.
