Forgiveness That Restores the Heart

Seeking forgiveness is a central part of faith. Every person makes mistakes, but turning back to Allah (swt) with sincerity is a sign of guidance and mercy.

The Prophet Muhammad (saw), despite being free from sin, regularly sought forgiveness. His example teaches us that istighfar is not only for moments of regret, but a daily act of closeness to Allah (swt).

The Mercy of Seeking Forgiveness

Recognising our sins is itself a blessing from Allah (swt). Through repentance and forgiveness, hearts are purified, burdens are lifted, and hope is restored. No matter the mistake, Allah’s (swt) mercy is always greater.

Simple Du’as for Forgiveness

One of the most beloved ways to seek forgiveness is through istighfar. The Prophet Muhammad (saw) would say it frequently throughout the day.

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللّٰه Transliteration: Astaghfirullah Translation: I seek forgiveness from Allah (swt)

A longer form includes repentance and return to Allah (swt).

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللّٰهَ رَبِّي وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ Transliteration: Astaghfirullaha rabbi wa atubu ilayh Translation: I seek forgiveness from Allah (swt), my Lord, and I turn to Him in repentance

A Du’a for Mercy and Forgiveness

This supplication, first spoken by Prophet Adam (as), reminds us to acknowledge our mistakes and rely fully on Allah’s (swt) mercy.

رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنفُسَنَا وَإِن لَّمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ Transliteration: Rabbana zalamna anfusana wa in lam taghfir lana wa tarhamna lanakunanna minal khasireen Translation: Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will surely be among the lost

Forgiveness and Protection

Alongside forgiveness, we ask Allah (swt) for protection and safety in this life and the next.

رَبَّنَا إِنَّنَا آمَنَّا فَاغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ Transliteration: Rabbana innana amanna faghfir lana dhunoobana wa qina ‘adhaban nar Translation: Our Lord, we believe, so forgive our sins and protect us from the punishment of the Fire

Forgiveness for Ourselves and Others

Islam encourages us to seek forgiveness not only for ourselves, but also for our parents and the wider community.

رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ Transliteration: Rabbana ghfir li wa liwalidayya wa lil mu’mineen Translation: Our Lord, forgive me, my parents, and the believers

A Lifelong Practice

Du’a for forgiveness is not limited to a specific time or place. It is a lifelong practice that softens the heart, strengthens faith, and brings us closer to Allah (swt).
