What is Fitrana (Zakat al-Fitr)?

Fitrana, also known as Zakat al-Fitr, is a charitable food donation made prior to Eid al-Fitr  prayer. This charitable donation is given before the end of Ramadan for the sake of pleasing Allah (swt) and helping the needy. Fitrana must be given on behalf of yourself or your loved ones.

How Much is Fitrana (Zakat al-Fitr) per person?

Our Prophet (saw) mentioned  Zakat al-Fitr should be the equivalent of one saa’ of food. Saa’ is an equivalent to four madd, which is an amount of food that can be scooped up with two hands.

In today’s value, based on the current cost of staple foods like rice or flour in Canada, each Zakat al-Fitr donation is approximately $10.

Ibn ’Abbas (RAA) narrated, “The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W) enjoined Zakat-ul-Fitr on the one who fasts (i.e. fasted during the month of Ramadan) to purify him from any indecent act or speech and for the purpose of providing food for the needy. It is accepted as Zakah for the person who pays it before the Eid prayer, and it is Sadaqah (i.e. voluntary charity) for the person who pays it after the Eid prayer.” (Sahih)
