Fasting the 6 Days of Shawwal Before Missed Fasts

The month of Shawwal, which follows Ramadan, is a time of great reward. It begins with Eid al-Fitr and includes the recommended fast of six days, about which the Prophet Muhammad (saw) said:

“Whoever fasts Ramadan and then follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if he fasted for a lifetime.” (Sahih Muslim)

Many Muslims ask whether these six fasts can be observed before making up missed obligatory fasts from Ramadan.

Scholarly Views

1. Make Up Missed Fasts First

Many scholars hold that missed Ramadan fasts should be prioritised, as obligatory acts take precedence over voluntary ones. Allah (swt) commands making up missed fasts after Ramadan (Qur’an 2:185). If only a few fasts were missed, it is often possible to complete them early in Shawwal and still fast the six days.

2. Fast Shawwal First if Many Fasts Are Owed

Some scholars permit fasting the six days of Shawwal before making up missed fasts if a person has many days to make up (e.g. due to illness or pregnancy). This is because Shawwal fasts are limited to the month, while missed fasts can be completed anytime before the next Ramadan.

Can Intentions Be Combined?

Scholars differ:

  • Some do not allow combining intentions, as each fast is a separate act of worship.
  • Others allow it but note that the full reward of Shawwal may not be attained, making it better to observe them separately if possible.

Overall, if you missed only a few fasts, make them up first, then fast the six days of Shawwal. If you missed many fasts, you may follow the opinion allowing Shawwal fasts first, then make up the missed fast days later.

Sincerity and fulfilling your obligations to Allah (swt) are most important. If unsure, consult a trusted local scholar.
