Shaban is the eighth month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar. Positioned between the sacred month of Rajab and the blessed month of Ramadan, Shaban is often overlooked, yet it held immense importance in the life and worship of Prophet Muhammad (saw).
Although Shaban is not one of the four sacred months, it is rich in spiritual opportunity. It is a month closely connected to worship, fasting, forgiveness, and preparation for Ramadan.
What Is Shaban?
Shaban is the month that follows Rajab and precedes Ramadan. Despite being positioned between two highly revered months, Shaban has its own virtues and significance –particularly due to the emphasis the Prophet Muhammad (saw) placed on worship during it.
It is a month of ibaadah (worship), reflection, and training the soul in readiness for Ramadan. The Prophet (saw) dedicated more voluntary fasting to Shaban than to any other month outside of Ramadan.
When Is Shaban 2026?
In 2026, Shaban is expected to begin on Tuesday January 20, depending on the sighting of the moon, and to end around February 17, 2026.
Shaban can consist of either 29 or 30 days, depending on the sighting of the moon’s crescent.
Key Dates in Shaban
The 15th of Shaban (Nisf Shaban / Shab-e-Barat)
The most significant day in Shaban is the 15th, known as Nisf Shaban or Shab-e-Barat.
Many scholars hold that the annual raising of deeds to Allah (swt) takes place during Shaban, based on various narrations. Deeds are presented to Allah (swt):
This makes Shaban a crucial time to reflect on one’s actions and seek forgiveness.
Why Is Shaban Important?
Shaban is deeply significant because it was beloved to the Prophet Muhammad (saw). A well-known narration states:
“Rajab is the month of Allah (swt), Shaban is my month, and Ramadan is the month of my Ummah.” (Hadith | Suyuti)
What is undisputed, however, is that the Prophet (saw) fasted extensively in Shaban and preferred that his deeds be raised while he was fasting.
Aishah (ra) said:
“I never saw the Messenger of Allah (swt) fasting for an entire month except Ramadan, and I never saw him fast more than he did in Shaban.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
Shaban is also an opportunity to train oneself spiritually and physically before Ramadan –helping to establish habits of fasting, prayer, and Qur’an recitation.
Celebrating Shaban Through Worship
Shaban is described as the month of the Prophet (saw). It is a time to increase worship, build stronger family and community ties, and deepen remembrance of Allah (swt).
Many scholars regard the night of the 15th of Shaban as one of the most sacred nights of the year. Muslims often observe it by:
Celebrating Shaban by Giving Sadaqah
One of the most virtuous acts in Shaban is Sadaqah. Giving charity purifies the heart and prepares the soul for Ramadan.
As the month of the Prophet (saw), honouring him includes caring for the poor, supporting orphans, and easing hardship – acts especially beloved to him.
Giving Sadaqah in Shaban helps cleanse wealth and intentions before Ramadan, allowing believers to enter the holy month with renewed sincerity.
Du‘a, Tasbeeh, and Salawat in Shaban
Shaban is an excellent time to:
The Prophet Muhammad (saw) said:
“The person closest to me on the Day of Judgement is the one who sent the most blessings upon me.” (Tirmidhi)
Another narration regarding the middle night of Shaban states:
“When it is the night of the middle of Shaban, spend the night in prayer and fast the next day…” (Ibn Majah)
There is a difference of opinion regarding the authenticity of this narration.
Fasting in Shaban
Shaban is the month in which the Prophet Muhammad (saw) fasted the most voluntary fasts.
Aishah (ra) said:
“I did not see the Messenger of Allah (saw) fasting more in any month than in Shaban.” (Sahih Muslim)
Fasting in Shaban:
Many Muslims also fast in Shaban to make up missed fasts from the previous Ramadan.
Recommended Fasting Days in Shaban 2026
Dates are subject to moon sighting.
The Prophet (saw) said:
“None of you should fast on a Friday unless he fasts the day before or the day after.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
Do You Have to Fast All Three White Days?
The Prophet Muhammad (saw) encouraged fasting the three white days every month. In Shaban, this Sunnah carries even greater significance.
If one is unable to fast all three days, many scholars recommend fasting at least the 15th of Shaban, as it precedes Shab-e-Barat.
There is scholarly discussion regarding the certainty of special rewards on this night, and some scholars state that there is no confirmed obligation.
Virtues of Shaban
Ramadan is a month of obligation, discipline, and transformation – but such transformation requires preparation.
Shaban is that preparation.
It is a month for:
Although often neglected, the Prophet Muhammad (saw) valued Shaban deeply. By honouring this month, believers position themselves to reap the full rewards of Ramadan.
As Shaban 2026 arrives, may we revive its spirit, follow the Sunnah of the Prophet (saw), and prepare our hearts for the mercy, forgiveness, and liberation that Ramadan brings.
