Making Amends in Accordance with Islamic guidance
Kaffarah is a form of charitable due that a Muslim gives when a fast during the holy month of Ramadan is broken intentionally without valid reason.
When someone knowingly misses or breaks a fast without legitimate cause, the standard path to redemption is to fast for 60 consecutive days. If one is unable to complete this, the alternative is financial—providing meals for 60 individuals. In the Canadian context, at an approximate cost of CAD $10 per person, the total comes to ~CAD $600 for each instance of missed or broken fast.
Formula: 60 × $10 = $600 per missed fast.
If a commitment (such as an oath) is broken, and the individual is required to offer Kaffarah for 10 people. If each person is calculated at an average cost of essentials like flour and rice in Canada, which is approximately $10, one must feed 10 people at the same rate of $10 per person.
$600
It’s important to distinguish between Kaffarah and Fidyah:
Fidyah is due when a fast is missed for a valid reason (for example illness, pregnancy, travel) and cannot be made up later. In that case, the payment corresponds to feeding one person per fast missed.
Kaffarah, by contrast, applies to fasts missed without valid excuse, and carries the higher requirement of feeding 60 people (or completing 60 fasts) per missed fast.
Kaffarah can be paid at anytime, but many Muslims pay during the month of Ramadan as it’s a month of blessings. The key is that it reflects sincere intention and prompt action once a fast has been missed or broken voluntarily.
By fulfilling Kaffarah, a person restores fulfills their obligation for missing a fast. Allah (swt) made it a commandment upon any Muslim who misses a fast, to make up the missed days of fasting. But for those who cannot, they must pay Kaffarah to feed someone in need.
For those who can’t fast for a valid reason, they must pay Fidyah.
